Are you worried about all of the issues and all of the decisions you’re being asked to make during this stressful time in your life? If you’re feeling like you’re out of control and you’re having a hard time focusing during the divorce process, you’re not alone.

The thoughts that go through our heads that just won’t stop can bring up feelings of anxiety, anger, sadness and most likely fear. One thing to really focus on is what you do have control over and that is “yourself” and “your” thoughts and feelings.

Three Things You Can Do

Here are some ways to take control of your thoughts and feelings and get into the present moment instead of regretting the past and worrying about the future.

1. Create A “Worry Zone.”

If you find that the stress of your divorce is affecting your entire life, then put 15 minutes on your calendar to do whatever you need to do to let your mind wonder. It might be journaling or going for a walk where you just “think”… no music, books on tape or podcasts – just thinking! Then if you find you’re worrying outside of that designated “worry zone,” then put it on your calendar for that 15 minutes again.

2. Remember Your Mindset Matters

If you’re spending your day thinking about how hard things are, you’ll spend your day feeling stressed, anxious and out of control. Start your day by asking yourself these three questions:

  • What am I letting go of today?
  • What am I grateful for today?
  • What will I focus on today?

Buy a small journal and carry it with you during the day. If you start feeling stressed and overwhelmed, pull out your journal and remind yourself that all is not lost.

3. Get A Coach Or Therapist

One of the best gifts you can give yourself is having “your person” whom you can talk with about everything that’s running through your mind. Having that person is priceless and the truth is that the most powerful and influential people in the world have coaches and therapists. Make yourself a priority. You may have taken care of your children, family, and loved ones and now it’s time for you.
