It Takes a Village

We can give thanks to Gwyneth and Chris for putting a name to the latest “trend” in divorce.  Whether you call it “conscious uncoupling”, collaborative, an unraveling or getting unmarried, it all has the same result. You are getting a divorce.  In the past, mainstream media taught us that our first step is call an attorney. You may see your future filled with courtroom drama, evidence and witnesses.  Of course unless you are an oil tycoon, rock star or Kardashian, this will not likely be the case.  Divorce can be an amicable process, with a team of professionals all working to find the kindest, gentlest and least costly outcome for both parties. After all, unless you are Brittany Spears, you probably spent some time courting your partner and building that relationship before getting married, so do you really think that you can officially end it in one day?

Even though this is an emotionally heated time, it’s important to step back and do your research. Surround yourself with good friends and family. Take care of yourself. Take some time to learn about all your options. Often times you need only a Certified Divorce Financial Advisor (CDFA) and a Mediator.  Many couples now are choosing to hire a professional for the financial parts and then do the filing and paperwork on their own. You may feel you’ve been wronged, and out for blood, but in the long run this will only lead to more pain, frustration and money.  What do you want the divorce to look like? Are there children involved?  Even more important; what do you want your financial future to look like after divorce?

Our new book can help you get started.
